The Finder

The Finder is a new show that recently premiered on Fox.  It is a spin off of the once brilliant Bones which has, unfortunately, turned into a wicked mess.  Despite that fact I still watch it as I am somewhat addicted and as a result was very excited for this new show.

A little background: Last season an episode of Bones featured the characters heading down to Florida Keys and meeting the characters of The Finder.  It was probably one of the best episodes of Bones in 2011 and thus made for an easy decision to pick up as a series.  In that episode, however, there was a character played by the lovely Saffron Burrows who is no longer a part of the show.  She played a tough bartender and helicopter pilot, but she has apparently been long forgotten.

The setup of the show is fairly simple.  Walter Sherman (Played by Geoff Stults) is a former military officer who suffered some brain damage while overseas.  Due to this he is now paranoid and blessed with the ability to find anything.   Implausible?  Possibly.  Entertaining?  Yes.  Walter is often off putting to those in his company and especially to those who are in need of his services. He owns a bar and he runs his business from there as well.

Keeping Walter grounded are his partner, Leo Knox (played by the brilliant Michael Clarke Duncan), US Marshall Isabel Zambada (Mercedes Masohn) and second generation criminal Willa Monday (Maddie Hasson) who is working at the bar as part of her probation.

Walter is not known for his tact and can often be insulting, skeptical and offensive.  This is where Leo comes in to interpret Walter for the
paying customers.  Walter also enlists Isabel for assistance and also returns the favor when necessary.

The premiere episode started with Walter finding John Fogarty’s missing guitar.  He found it in a unique way and the thief was then caught by Isabel.  Fogarty himself provides the theme song and I am guessing his appearance was part of his payment.  However, I have not seen bad acting by a musician to this extent since David Gates guest starred on The Hardy Boys back in the 70’s.  Let’s hope it was a one time deal.  The rest of the plot involved the son of one of Walter’s military friends attempting to find his missing father.  I don’t want to get into too many plot details in case you will be watching it soon, but safe to say that Walter uses more than a few interesting methods to find him.

Walter has a unique relationship with Isabel and it appears that they are now or have at one time been romantically involved.  It appeared the romance was well on its way until they were interrupted by bad guys.  It did, however, afford us an all too brief appearance by Isabel in black bra and panties.  More of that please!

The other thing I like about Isabel, besides her toughness, is that she is hot and she is well aware that she is hot.  So many times we see hot women in shows that try and play it off like it’s nothing.  Isabel had a scene where she was unable to go into the suspect’s warehouse because she said she was too hot to go in.  I found that refreshing.

Overall I think the show is good and has great potential.  I do have a problem with the Willa character and her probation officer played by Amy Aquino.  I have a hard time believing that any probation officer would set her up to live in a trailer and work in a seedy out of the way bar with these people.  I liked Willa and I am fine with her storyline of being a former con, but the probation officer and that storyline can disappear as far as I am concerned.  Just let the girl fight her own demons without having to say every five minutes that she does not want to go back to jail.

I look forward to the rest of this season and I expect this show to be a big hit.  You can see The Finder Thursday nights at 9 PM on Fox.
