Don't Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23

Recently I was invited to attend an advance screening of the premiere episode of Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23.  The show will make its debut in April on ABC and frankly I am not sure what they will ultimately call it.  The promos they are running now replace Bitch with B, but sometimes it is often referred to as just Apartment 23.  ABC already has the god awful Good Christian Bitches, which they just call GCB, so it is unlikely they will keep the “bitch” in the title.  While I will not reveal any spoilers of the premiere I would like to tell you a little about the show and my opinion.  After all, that’s why I was selected to see it in the first place.

The Bitch in question is played by Krysten Ritter.  She is a beautiful and talented actress and former model that you have probably seen before, but may not know her name.  Krysten may be best known for playing the sarcastic sidekick to the main protagonists in films such as Confessions of a Shopaholic and She’s Out of My League, but more recently she portrayed Jane on the brilliant Breaking Bad.  Krysten plays Chloe, a con artist that scams her advertises for potential roommates in her incredibly nice NYC apartment.  She is super nice and sweet at first, but once the new roomie moves in she turns into the bitch.  Chloe scams them by taking their money and driving them crazy so they move out quickly.  She is cold, heartless and will make up any lie to get her way.  She is also hilarious.

New to NYC is June, played by the incredibly stunning and gorgeous Dreama Walker.  I looked up this
stunner’s IMDB and she has appeared in a few things, but nothing I have seen.  Fans of Gossip Girl will probably recognize her right away.  I have now learned that I should have been a fan of Gossip Girl.  I officially have my new dream girl and her name is Dreama.  Cool.  June has moved to NYC from Indiana to take a job at a mortgage company and has been provided with a huge apartment.  On her first day of work the owner is arrested for embezzling millions from the company and she is left without a job and is homeless.  After a search for a new place to live June stumbles upon Chloe and thinks that they will become BFF’s.  Little does Jane know that Chloe is a bitch, but little does Chloe know that she has met her match in the sweetly charming Jane.

Also on the show is James Van Der Beek playing the role of…James Van Der Beek.  Well, I hope it is an exaggerated version of himself.  This is not a new idea, but it really works here.   James is a close friend of Chloe and knows all about her scams having been a victim himself.  The show has its share of Dawson jokes and frankly I laughed at every one of them.  On a side note, isn’t it great how well the main players on Dawson’s Creek have done since the show ended?  Joshua Jackson (Pacey) is great on Fringe and married  to the lovely Diane Kruger, Michelle Williams (Jen) has been nominated for three Academy Awards (and will eventually win one), Katie Holmes (Joey) was in Batman Begins then married Tom Cruise and James (Dawson) is playing a parody of himself on an ABC sitcom.  Okay, maybe Dawson has not had quite as much success, but he’s still very good.  “I Don’t Want to Wait…”

There are also some supporting characters that are funny as well, but to tell you too much about them would spoil some of the fun.  This I will let you know to look out for Chloe’s neighbors and for my personal favorite, Mark.

Apartment 23 is clever and sharply written.  The performances are all top rate and the cast has impeccable comedic timing.  We are currently having a renaissance of great sitcoms and The Bitch in Apartment 23 truly fits the bill.  The show will premiere April 11th 2012 on ABC immediately following Modern Family.  If you are a fan of smart comedy filled with sarcasm and great characters I highly recommend The Bitch in Apartment 23.
