Two Broke Girls

Two Broke Girls is a new CBS comedy on Monday nights following the still
brilliant “How I met your Mother”.  When I first heard of this show I was hopeful it would be good, but still a bit leery as I have been fooled by a solid premise before.  I am happy to report that this show has become my favorite new comedy of the fall, narrowly beating out “New Girl” on Fox.

The show, as you would expect, is about two girls and is one of two series this fall from comedian Whitney Cummings.  The girls work together in a dirty looking diner in Brooklyn and also share an apartment with a horse.  Let’s meet the cast:

Kat Dennings plays Max, a street smart girl with an attitude and a quick wit.  She has obviously worked at the diner for some time when she meets Caroline, played by the stunningly beautiful Beth Behrs.  Caroline was once a wealthy socialite until her father was convicted in a Bernie Madoff like Ponzi scheme.  She is now penniless and was homeless until Max took her (and Chestnut, her horse) in.  Also seen at the diner are Earl, the cashier (Garrett Morris), Han, the manager (Matthew Moy) and Oleg, the obnoxious Russian cook (Jonathan Kite).

Max makes incredibly delicious cupcakes that she sells at the diner and Caroline explains to her that they need a mere $250,000 to open their own cupcake business.  Max, poor and already working two jobs, rebuffs her at first, but realizes that Caroline has a business savvy that could make it work.  The show keeps a running total at the end of how much the girls have raised towards their new business venture.  It’s safe to say that this show will need to run for quite a while if Max and Caroline are to meet their goals.

Now it is safe to say that I have always been a fan of Kat Dennings.  She has a certain charm about her and easily falls into roles that require her to be tough, cynical and outspoken.  She does an outstanding job as Max and her repertoire of insults knows no end.  That she has such a great chemistry with the vastly underrated Beth Behrs is a plus.

Beth is fairly new to me, but I do recall seeing her once on an episode of the delightful Castle.  I have to
say that Beth has the sexiest legs I have ever seen on an actress.  As Caroline does not have a lot of clothes she is often seen wearing a pair of shorts that she purchased at a thrift store with Max.  They have to be the most incredible shorts for her body.  They show off her legs and behind in an incredible way.  I find myself simply staring at her legs for entire episodes.  Beth is very believable in her role as Caroline and it’s fun to watch her so quickly adapt to being poor and still keep a very positive outlook.

One of my favorite characters is the boss, Han, an Asian man who desperately tries to fit in.  Now I find it a bit odd that Han is played by a guy that is a mere 17 years old, but it works so I cannot complain.  My favorite thing that Han has done thus far is to wear a t-shirt with a picture of himself with his hand out that says “Talk to the Han”.  Our two other recurring characters, Earl and Oleg, remain fairly underdeveloped.  Both are good for at least one good line per episode.

By far, my favorite episodes thus far involve our two leads and their efforts to understand and get to know each other better.  One episode that was particularly well done was one where Caroline brought Max to sneak into her old townhouse in Manhattan in order to retrieve her night guard for her teeth.  Max took a bath and they were able to get out with a few more items of clothes for Caroline. Seeing them going out for sushi while wearing layers of Caroline's clothes was hilarious.

Any show that makes you laugh out loud is a good show and for what it’s worth, Two Broke Girls fits the bill for me
